Why Monthly Examination
Regular self-examination builds familiarity with your normal — the foundation of noticing when something changes. Most changes are benign, but early detection significantly improves outcomes when something is concerning.
Technique
Visual: Stand before a mirror. Look for changes in size, shape, contour, skin texture, or nipple appearance. Repeat with arms raised.
Lying down: One arm behind head. Use three middle fingers in small circular motions at light, medium, and firm pressure over the entire breast area.
Standing: Repeat in the shower with soapy skin, which can make tissue easier to examine.
What to Watch For
- New lump or thickening in breast or underarm
- Changes in size, shape, or contour
- Skin dimpling, puckering, redness, or changed texture
- Nipple changes — inversion, discharge, altered appearance
- Persistent localised pain
Augmented Breasts
Push the implant gently toward the chest wall and examine surrounding tissue. Inform all healthcare providers and imaging technicians that you have implants.
