Throughout history, clothing has been one of the primary tools for negotiating social power through the body. Sumptuary laws regulated who could wear what. Court dress created hierarchies of access. The corset debate of the 19th and early 20th century became a proxy for broader arguments about women's autonomy.

Liberation Movements in Fashion

The 20th century saw multiple waves of fashion liberation — the relaxation of the corset after World War I, the trouser revolution, the youth fashion explosion of the 1960s, and the body-positive fashion movements of the 21st century. Each renegotiated which bodies had the right to wear which garments.

The Cosplay Contribution

Contemporary cosplay culture asserts in practice that any character can be cosplayed by any body — that all body types deserve creative representation and that handmade garments designed for non-standard bodies are works of genuine art and craft.
