A Brief History
Wearing historically intimate garments as outerwear has punctuated fashion regularly, not just once. Madonna's Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra in 1990 is the most famous modern reference point, but the tradition runs deeper: Edwardian fashion exposed corsetry at the neckline as a design feature rather than a secret; 1970s fashion borrowed the camisole and slip dress for daytime and evening wear alike; 1990s slip dresses did the same with a different silhouette. Each revival reframes an intimate garment as a public statement rather than something to hide.
Full Busts and Outerwear Lingerie
The corset-as-top is the most successful full-bust expression of this trend, for a structural reason as much as an aesthetic one: a corset's boning and lacing are built to manage and shape bust weight, so wearing it visibly means the support structure itself becomes the design, rather than being hidden underneath and pretended away. That's different from, say, a sheer top over a bra, where the support garment is doing real work but is styled as if it isn't there.
Making It Work Day-to-Day
Outerwear lingerie reads best paired with structured, higher-coverage bottom pieces (tailored trousers, a structured skirt) rather than styled head-to-toe as "underwear" — the contrast is what makes it read as a deliberate design choice instead of an accident. Layering a blazer or structured jacket loosely over a corset top is a common way to move the look between more and less formal settings without changing the piece itself.
The Confidence Requirement
More than any technique, lingerie as outerwear requires being able to meet others' reactions — curious, surprised, occasionally judgmental — without adjusting your expression in response. That's arguably the real skill involved, more than the styling itself.
