Why Hand Washing Actually Matters
This isn't fussy advice — machine washing measurably shortens the life of structured lingerie. Underwires shift and can bend or poke through casing when agitated against other garments; elastic stretches unevenly under machine agitation instead of the consistent give it's engineered for; lace snags on zippers and hooks; molded or foam cups lose their shape permanently once crushed and re-expanded repeatedly. Hand washing in cool water takes about two minutes per piece and is the difference between a bra lasting 6 months and lasting 2+ years of regular wear.
Technique
Cool water, a small amount of mild detergent or dedicated lingerie wash (regular detergent can degrade elastic over time), gentle swishing by hand — never twisting or wringing, which is what actually damages elastic fibers. Rinse thoroughly until no soap remains. Press water out gently between two towels rather than wringing. Reshape cups immediately, while damp, before setting to dry — foam and molded cups dry into whatever shape they're left in.
Drying and Storage
Never tumble dry — heat is the single fastest way to destroy elastic and foam structure, far more than washing itself. Lay flat on a towel, or hang by the center gore (the fabric piece between the cups) rather than by the straps, which stretches them under the wet garment's weight. For storage, nest cups inside each other rather than folding flat — folding creases foam permanently and distorts underwire shape over time. A drawer where bras sit upright with cups intact, rather than stacked flat, keeps shape between wears and is worth the extra few inches of drawer space.
Rotation
Elastic needs roughly 24 hours to recover its shape after wear — wearing the same bra two days running doesn't let it rebound, which shortens its effective lifespan. Rotating between at least two to three well-fitted bras, rather than relying on one, is a simple change that extends the life of each.
