What Boudoir Photography Is
Boudoir photography — named for the intimate private chambers of French aristocracy — is the art of photographing the human body in intimate settings with emphasis on sensuality, beauty, and authentic presence. It differs from explicit content by its emphasis on suggestion and aesthetic; from fashion photography by its focus on the individual rather than the garment.
The History
Boudoir photography's roots are in 19th-century portraiture. The tradition developed through mid-century pin-up photography, the centrefold aesthetic of the 60s and 70s, and the professional boudoir photography boom of the 2000s. It has always been a negotiation between subject's self-expression and photographer's aesthetic vision.
